Criminal Profiling and Criminal Psychology

Criminal psychology is the study of why people commit crimes. Criminal psychologists would also assess criminals to make educated guesses about the actions a criminal may have take after committing a crime. (Cherry, n.d.) After studying and assessing, criminal psychologists often provide their deductions about the crime and behaviour of offenders in court. One important duty of a criminal psychologist is to profile criminal (explained in the next paragraph).

Criminal profiling involves finding the link between two or more cases based on the crime scene and victims by examining cases. (Kotake, n.d) The profilers would look at the background, physical and behavioural characteristic of the offender. It does not only profile criminals, it helps to eliminate those who are not involved in the crime. The more experience an offender is, the more careful he is in leaving physical evidence behind. By looking at the criminal profiles, it gives the investigators important information that will help in identifying or apprehending criminals.
