Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS)

The Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) is a national automated fingerprint identification and criminal history system maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) (Wikipedia, n.d.).  IAFIS is the largest biometric database in the world and it consists of fingerprints, corresponding criminal histories, mug shots and fine details like scars and tattoo photos of criminals (FBI, n.d.).

By utilising this system, examiners could match latent fingerprints from crime scenes to the country’s database and obtain the procession within a short period (Miami Police Department, n.d.). Criminal submissions could be obtained within two hours while civil submissions require less than a day to process (FBI, n.d.). With this process, examiners are empowered to cut down the time spent on investigation while not compromising on the accuracy of identifying the criminal.
